Message on the Occasion of the 18th Miyukino Film Festival in Madarao

My name is Kishio Ezawa, Mayor of Iiyama City.
On the occasion of the 18th Miyukino Film Festival in Madarao, I would like to extend a few words of welcome.

I would like to offer my heartfelt welcome to all of you who have traveled from across Japan to Madarao Highlands here in Iiyama City.
Madarao Highlands, blessed with abundant snowfall, has developed into a major snow resort and welcomes many visitors from Japan and around the world who seek high-quality snow.

Now in its 18th year, this film festival is truly distinctive, featuring screenings of short films from Japan and the Nordic countries in a unique “snow cinema,” where the screen itself is made of snow.

For Iiyama City, snow is an invaluable natural resource.
Film screenings held amid the serene natural environment of a snowy highland region create a uniquely dreamlike and fantastical atmosphere, and I am told that many devoted fans look forward to this festival every year.
Although Japan and the Nordic countries are geographically distant and have limited opportunities for regular exchange, this festival provides a precious occasion to encounter not only Japanese culture but also the history, traditions, climate, and daily lives of people in the Nordic region through film.

Furthermore, I would like to express my deep respect for the meaningful and steady efforts being made to open new horizons for young people, such as providing opportunities for high school student filmmakers to engage in dialogue with and receive guidance from professional film directors. I sincerely hope that the creativity and dedication cultivated over the years will continue to bear fruit, making this festival even more vibrant and dynamic in the years to come.

In closing, I wish for the continued growth and success of the Miyukino Film Festival, and for the good health and well-being of all those involved. With these hopes, I conclude my words of welcome.
